Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck

Posted by Flora Parekh on Jul 04, 2018
Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is an extraordinary sleep-away summer camp in Center Moriches, New York. With 37 acres located on the shores of Kaler’s Pond, Long Island, our camp is unique in that, for 72 years, we have catered to the needs of children and young people with special needs.

Founded in 1946 by the Rotary Club of the Moriches, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck was originally designed for the area’s young victims of polio. Since then the structure of the camp has evolved, but our mission has always been the same, “to help children with special needs achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summer-time environment and to have fun.” Our Motto is “Summer is for Everyone.”

Another Silent Killer - Distracted Driving

The club has a very in-depth presentation by Ms. Karen Torres speaking on this topic. Ms. Torres tours Suffolk County speaking on this topic which deeply touched her life in 2009. She lost her father to a distracted driver in a completely preventable accident.

What is distracted driving. Well you probably consider texting while driving and you would be correct but what other behaviors are distracted driving? Eating, talking on the phone, drinking even soft drinks, reaching under the seat for items that we dropped and I am sure we can all name a few more.

Distracted driving has surpassed the number of drinking accidents fatalities in the 16 to 21 age group. a sobering statistic.

Ms. Torres is available for speaking engagements to various clubs and organizations contact her at karen@all4udad.com and lets all "get our heads out of our apps".

The Planning Starts NOW

The Michael J. Murphy Run around the lake is the major fundraising event for the Ronkonkoma Rotary club for the entire year. This is a huge undertaking involving every member of the club. all of the committee chairs will be back from last year and there will be some new areas for people to participate. This year we will be adding a Corporate Challenge which will give corporations a way to participate as well as individuals.

So how does an event for 2500 runners get started. Well first we pick a date. The 2017 run will be on Saturday June 24th.  Now all the planning can move forward. Next we will organize into committees. These committees will organize the various functions like Media, publicity, Virtual racers, registration and others. Rotarians will volunteer for these committees and as our president says "Teamwork makes the Dream Work" we are hoping to raise $150,000 to continue the great work of Rotary in 2017.

Protecting Our National Resources

The Ronkonkoma Rotary club.  Had a presentation from Kelsey Taylor (yes the daughter of our own Ralph Taylor). Pictured above is our President Jeff Brown, Kelsey Taylor and the proud papa Ralph Taylor.

Kelsey is working at the national seashore on Fire Island. There are 415 national parks most of which we do not know but all under the protection of the National Parks Service. The National Park on Fire Island while in a very urban / suburban are is part of the National Wilderness.
A very interesting statistic is that there are 4500 private parcels enclosed within teh nations National Parks.
Another local National park area is teh William Floyd Estate at Smiths Point. This house has been renovated over the years and each architect has left an imprint of the era it was modified in the architecture of the building.
Kelsey in her day to day work will be testing mosquitos she traps to check for diseases like West Nile disease. She checks on the bat population of long eared bats, checking on the TIC population for spread of Lyme Disease and numerous other animals that live on Fire Island.

The National Parks service also participated in the Patchogue River Cleanup and coordinates the work of many other governmental agencies.

Guatamala Assistance

Guatamala Assistance

Our own Regina Volta and a part of the City Hill Church will be leaving to assist children in Guatemala. This country has the highest rate of child murder and has over 370,000 living on the streets. the orphanage population is 5000.  This trip will help the local organizations with supplies and start a program to raise $150,000 over the next 3 years to build an orphanage to house another 30 children.

You can see from these statistics that the need is great and the available aid is small.  The club donated a portion of their happy dollars to support Regina in her efforts
Kudos to Regina and the rest of her delegation on the way to Guatemala.
Pictured below are president Jeff Browne, Chris Rivera, Regina Volta and Rose Quaranta. Chris and Regina will report back on their trip in the future

The Ronkonkoma Rotary Club through their generous support helped the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition raise $115,000 for their annual campaign. The NOCC supports education and awareness of this disease both to doctors and hospitals to improve diagnostic techniques and hopefully catch the disease in the early stages where long term remissions are possible.
We also had 2 rotarians participate in the walk Jo Bennet  and Mike Eller who is pictured.

One Door Closes and Another Door Opens

One Door Closes and Another Door OpensO

Greg Plante iis now a Past President. At Gregs last meeting as President the club held a Toast and Roast to send Greg off. The interesting part of this toast and roast almost no one had any roast items almost all the speeches were toasts and thank yous for a great job. Greg in his tenure raised the membership from about 14 to almost 50. the run around the lake in his final year has grown to 2500 runners and $100,000 income
The club has added more service projects and assistance work all of the items that make this a very exciting club. This door has closed.

The new door that has opened is our new President Jeff Browne. Jeff starts to his tenure with our July 7th meeting. He has instituted some committee changes and we now have a trivia question to answer at every meeting the trivia winner will win a donation in their name to the Rotary Foundation. We are using the Happy Dollar segment to get more information abut club members with the intent of making the club more personal.

This writer is certain Jeff will make a great president and I am sure the entire club will help him in whatever way they can see the story content  got more on Jeff's first meeting

Curvy Girls

Rotary Supports Curvy Girls

The Ronkonkoma Rotary Club made a $1000.00 donation to an organization called Curvy Girls. They support people with Scoliosis, a disease that affects more younger women than men. This organization has 67 clubs in 38 states and 11 countries. Our speaker named Katy was diagnosed at 12 years old. The symptom, back pain. The original diagnosis was growing pains. however after being more persistent it was discovered Katy had a 20 degree tilt. The treatment is a full body brace worn all the time.If the tilt goes above 70 degrees surgery is the recommended treatment.
Curvy Girls is an organization that helps with the feelings that come to young women forced to wear this brace. Helps them feel better about being "crooked".
This year Curvy Girls is holding its third convention completely arranged by the girls.

10/16/14 Program-Polio Plus-Dave Ardam

Posted by Gregory Plante on Oct 15, 2014

Today we got to hear from PDG Dave Ardam about Polio Plus.  This has been a Rotary program started in the 1970's looking to eradicate Polio from the world.  To date Polio is only found in 3 countries in the world and is a main focus of not only Rotary, but CDC, World Health Organization as well as the Bill and Linda Gate's Foundation.  We are so close to getting rid of this terrible disease and with Rotary behind it, I know we will finish the job.  Its great to see how passionate Dave Ardam is about Polio Plus as well as all things Rotary.

Today we heard from John Batanchiev, staff attorney at Long Island Housing Services.  He explained to us about how frequent it is for people to be treated unfairly when it comes to housing.  They help out both property owners as well as people looking for housing and rentals.  They do help a lot of people dealing with the foreclosure process in our current economy.  Interesting Program!

Posted by Gregory Plante on Sep 24, 2014

Today's program was given to the club by Joe DeVincent who spoke about the Gift of Life Program. Joe brought in a father (Flamur Sahiti) and son (Dionit Sahiti) from Kosovo who will be having a life saving surgery on Wednesday. The Gift of Life is one of the best programs Rotary is involved in. We get to help save childrens lives all over the world. We raise money locally which helps fund these projects. Most of the children stay with Rotarians families while they are here waiting for the surgery to happen. Great Program Joe and to all the people involved in this great work.

Today's speaker was Jennifer Anderson of Send Out Cards.  Jennifer informed us of a great service that would help people with relationships.  You can set up an account and send out cards to family, friends and business associates.  You make the cards online and can upload any personal greetings, picture and even video links to these amazing cards.  The cards can then be sent out directly without you ever putting your hands on them.  This service can act as great personal gifts as well as promoting your business.  The best benefit might be to keep all the GUYS, from getting in trouble for forgetting important birthdays and anniversaries!  Great Job Jennifer, and good luck.

Posted by Gregory Plante on Jan 30, 2013
Today we had Christina Rosa-Ragona come to our meeting from Stony Brook Children's Hospital.  Christina updated us about all the things going on to help out the way children are taken care of.  There was a great need for a state of the art Children's Hospital here in Suffolk County.  Families no longer have to travel long distances to get great help.  The new Children areas are considered a "Pain Free Zone" and have bright colors to lighten the mood and all the renovation are very kid and family friendly.  They take in consideration the parents who stayed with their child during times of need by offering them places to sleep instead of sleeping in chairs and waiting areas.  Great Job with all the work and hopefully we will be able to take a tour of the facility.

Posted by Gregory Plante on Jan 23, 2013
Today's guest speaker was Lou Scotti and Theresa Leuffren of Project Hope.  Project hope was started by FEMA directly after Hurricane Sandy which devastated parts of Long Island and New Jersey.  Project Hope concentrates on helping individuals, businesses and communities with crisis counseling following this tragedy.  This part of the recovery process is often overlooked by people not directly affected.  A great analogy given by Lou Scotti, was "Its like a death of a loved one, the first 2 weeks you are overwhelmed with support, then as time goes on, you realize you are all alone".  They offer support, or just someone to talk to for people after all the immediate help goes away.  Project Hope representatives are located helping out in all the counties affected by Super Storm Sandy.  Great Job!

Food Drive Update

Posted by Gregory Plante on Jan 16, 2013
We had a food drive this past weekend at the Stop and Shop located on Portion road in Ronkonkoma.  It was our most successful food drive to date.  The amount of food that the people of our community were able to help donate was amazing.  People realized how much these kinds of food drives help out the local community and really went above and beyond.  I wanted to thank our entire Rotary club for all the time and effort everyone put in to make the event successful.  We also want to thank all the other volunteers that came to help hand out flyers, gather and sort the food into bins and help load the multiple trucks and trailers we had filled to store the food.  We were able to fill multiple food pantries in our area.  Great Job by All!

Guest Speaker: PDG Irving Toliver-9/20/12

Posted by Gregory Plante on Sep 19, 2012
Today's guest speaker was Past District Governon Irving Toliver.  Irving is a member of the Huntington Station Rotary Club and served as District Governor for District 7260 for the Rotary Year 2011-2012.  Todays visit was informing us about District Membership (which he is the District Membership Chair) and the trends in Rotary we are facing in North America.  Even though worldwide rotary membership is holding around 1.2 million members, it has been steadily declining in North America for years.  Irving told us about new strategies to recuit new members as well as engaging them to stay Rotarians for many years.  He encouraged our club to try new ideas to attract members.  If we all work together, we can all keep Rotary Strong for another 100 years!

Serving Dinner at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck 8/29/12

Posted by Gregory Plante on Aug 29, 2012
Several Rotarians took time out of their busy schedules to help cook and serve dinner on the final night of Camp for the summer.  There were about 50 campers plus all the counselors working the came for the week.  The menu included BBQ hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage as well as garden salad, potato & macaroni salads.  We got to watch some of the final performances from the campers including karaoke from many of the kids.  The counselors were doing a great job getting all the campers involved with the singing as well as helping out with dinner.  Many of the campers were from Europe working for the summer to get some experience here in the states.  Many of us got to look around the camp and see all the improvements going on.  It was a great night and a great experience.

Last week the Sachem High School East Interact Volunteer Club sponsored its third annual Pancakes For Parkinson's fundraiser to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research (MJFF).

The philanthropic event at East has grown every year since its inception. In the first year $1,100 was raised, and the following year generated over $1,500. This year the civic-minded student club surpassed its goal of $2,000, with a grand total of over $2,300 collected from charging students, faculty and members of the community $1 per pancake.

Starting July 1, 2011 the new dues structure will be as follows:

Annual dues per member = $400.00,  this will cover the District dues, International dues and Rotarian magazine.

The annual dues should be paid in full. Arrangements can be made to pay it in installments.

The Rotary Club of the Ronkonkomas is proud to support Dora Vizcencz an Exchange Student  from Pecs, Hungary who will be spending the school year here in the USA.  She is currently staying at the home of District Governor Arnie and Rose Quaranta, and will spend the second half of her stay with President Diane and Morty Frank.  Dora is attending Connetquot High School where she is a Senior and also a member of the Tennis Club, her favorite sport.  She was very excited to have had the opportunity to attend the US Open last week.  Besides speaking Hungarian, she also speaks English, German and is learning Spanish.  Several Club members met Dora at the Quaranta's home last week.  She was beaming from ear to ear, as she told us a little bit about her family and how excited she is to be here.  We are looking for members of the club to spend time with Dora and perhaps "show her the sights."  Stay tuned for updates on Dora's visit.

Just Some Random Ramblings

There was an area meeting (that I missed) and the dinner at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck (which I also missed).  I'm still learning the new web site design and will post some photos in the JOURNAL  section. Oh, and the first annual Family Fun Day at the Timothy Hill Ranch. See the photos in the JOURNAL section

Newest member, Amaury Hernandez, was our program last week and gave us a great presentation on reverse mortgages. If you have any questions on any types of mortgages, Amaury is the "go to" guy to see.

Mike Stoltz and Matt, from the MBA, were promoting the golf outing on Sept 29, 2010. It's at the Swan Lake Golf Club in Manorville. The golf fee is $185.00, dinner only is only $75.00.  There's a flyer somewhere on this web site. Registration starts at 11:00 AM, followed by lunch; 1:00 PM shotgun start; 6:00 PM dinner.  Awards, raffles, & an auction will follow dinner. Did I mention it's only $185/golfer?

We may be losing Kelly as a member. She has a job offer in Memphis at the University. We wish her lots of luck.

If you missed a meeting and have a makeup, let Lydia, Diane or me (Ed Iraci) know. We can post it on the web site.

NEW DUES STRUCTURE

Posted by ED IRACI on Jul 11, 2010

As of the last board meeting, the dues structure has changed. Rotary International and District 7260 have raised the dues for clubs. As a result, we have put the following dues structure for the coming year (starting July 1, 2010).

We have people who do not eat breakfast so, to be fair, their dues are $100 per quarter.

Full dues for those who do chow down at all the meetings, their dues will be $250 per quarter. Breakfast cost is $12 per meeting.

Now the big question is...how do I make out the invoice for the quarterly dues??

Thanks to Arnie & Rose for the spectacular party last Saturday. Kelly and Barbara arrived early to help with the auction items and setup. I was helping at the bar with PDG George, Forrest and others I can't remember. We were testing the libations to make sure they were safe to drink.
Wendy, from Westhampton Club, was the auctioneer and did a fabulous job. Many auction donations were brought and Wendy managed to unload them all on an unsuspecting crowd of about 100 people.
Rose will have about $12,000 for the school in India. Thanks to all who bid on everything and anything.
On a sad note many members of the Ronkonkoma Club were not in attendance. Kelly, Ed & Barbara, Mike & Robin and Diane & Mort were there representing our club. The holiday weekend was probably the reason.

I never thought that the military was going to be part of my life.  I don't look so good in green, and I am not so sure about boot camp at my age.  However, on Sunday I, like many of you, found myself part of Arnie's new Army.  In the past, I have often commented on how inspiring Arnie's dedication is to Rotary.  When I have had the opportunity to listen to him speak I not only want to be a better Rotarian but a better person.  Same can be said about Arnie's speech on Sunday.  Watching the governor's medallion be passed down through the ranks of Past District Governors was amazing.  Can you imagine how many great deeds were done while those governors were at the helm of their respective Rotary districts?  While it is hard to say just how much Arnie is going to accomplish, I am confident that Arnie is going to leave a stamp  as big as the gavel he was given on District 7260 forever.    And Arnie, even though I never considered a career in military, it is my wish that I can join your ranks to do my personal best to support you in all of good works you are sure to accomplish this year.  Not only am I genuinely honored to call you my friend and fellow Rotarian, I am truly privileged to call you Governor.  Thank you so much to Diane for coordinating such a great event to a big shout out to Kevin and his staff at the Marriott for the wonderful food, great service, and amazing time had by all.

PRE RUN PASTA DINNER We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful night for The Run Around the Lake Pasta Dinner.  Not only was the weather beautiful, attendance was fantastic, the food was delicious, and good fellowship was enjoyed by all!      Besides our Rotary Family it was especially good to see The Connetquot Rotaract Club, Denise Schwarz of The Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Ronkonkoma's, and so many local residents in attendance.       We would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Anthony from The Beach Club for donating his services so that we, as Rotarians, can continue to accomplish all the great things we do!  Great work for coordinating the event Dr. Lou!    Check out the photo journal for more great pictures!

Memorial Day

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Ramblings

PDG Russ Moran was our speaker this week (May 27,2010). An attorney and publisher, Russ talked about his upcoming book about judges in America. As an avid reader of mysteries and some fantasy novels, I can tell you his book will probably not make it on my list of preferred reading. Sorry Russ. I will wait for Alan to read it and give me his review.

Our club has very important events coming up. The RUN is on June 26 and we need the journal ads to make any money on this event. Get them in ASAP.

Are you selling the 50/50 raffles?? Please do. The drawing is on June 27 at the installation dinner. Next board meeting is on Wednesday, June 2, at 7:30 AM, at the Marriott. Bring any unsold tickets with you. Better yet, bring in SOLD tickets with the money.

Speaking of the installation dinner...June 27 at the Marriott, 3:00 PM. This is an ALL HANDS event. Let President Diane know you're coming via e-mail or phone.

June 10 we will be giving out the scholarship money. We had to cut back on that for lack of funds. This is why we need your help in raising funds for our charities.

Speaking of charities...mine is the Rotary Foundation. You can't find a better place to make your donations. Go online and donate with a credit card. See me at a meeting & hand me a check to the Rotary Foundation. Every Rotarian, Every Year means you should be giving on your own and not through the club.

On October 9th through October 11th, The Rotary Club of the Ronkonkomas in conjunction with the Sachem North, Sachem East, and Connetquot Interact Clubs are working to "stuff a truck" full of food.

Rotarians Bill Brenner, Ed Iraci, Scott Kaplan, Mike Stoltz, and Kelly Penwell worked along side of Sachem North students, staff of The Clubhouse of Suffolk and Justin Quaranta today to collect forty totes of food from the generous shoppers at Lake Ronkonkoma's own Stop and Shop.

Numerous shoppers reported how wonderful they thought the Sachem North students were.  I have to say without hesitation they are right!  I am incrediblyproud of the twenty Sachem North Interactors who turned out for the event!

Good luck to the rest of the Ronkonkoma Rotary team and Interact Clbs for the rest of the weekend.

And Arnie, if you don't propose Justin for membership I am going to!

What do Rotarians do?

We hear that question from people who show an interest and are potential members.  What's your answer? One good one is:
Rotary club members are part of a diverse group of professional leaders working to address various community and international service needs. Through community service and other means, Rotary club members help promote peace and understanding throughout the world. Our members are our most important asset. They are the force that allows Rotary to carry out its many humanitarian efforts and achieve its mission.

Another answer would be to describe any one of our great SERVICE projects that will relate to the interests of the person if you happen to know them.  Youth Exchange, Group Study Exchange support, hands on help for the other partners in the community, Polio Plus, Club and personal Foundation contributions, social activities, opportunities to serve in local and international service activities, and the excellent friendships with all Rotarians both here and the world over.

You can also say that the person wearing the Rotary symbol (example, your pin) is saying that he/ she is a person that can be counted on, has high personal and professional ethical standards, and is a friend.  In fact, if you wear your pin, people will ask you what it is for if they don't already know! And they will probably want to join us!!
